SSRI’s

Serotonin re-uptake inhibitors are the most commonly used antidepressants in the elderly. They are preferred for their lack of side effects and efficacy. Sertraline (Zoloft) and Citalopram (Celexa) "lead the pack", due their lack of drug interactions and limited side effects.  Sertraline can be prescribed more cost effectively by prescribing the larger pill and break in half. Example: using 100 mg tablet for 50 mg dosing.
